The internet is having fun playing guessing games about the characters in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, to wit:

Sauron watch: Is <this character> going to turn out to be Sauron? Maybe <that character>?

Who dat: Who is <this yet to be identified character> going to turn out to be? Gandalf? No, Gandalf hasn’t shown up yet. Are they messing with the timeline?

Name that doom: Boy, <so-and-so> seems really evil. Will they tun out to be a Nazgûl, one of the Dead Men of Dunharrow, etc.?

That’s not in the book: The purists’ catch phrase every time a difference shows up. This is typically said in reply to a post about the show because a true purist wouldn’t be caught dead watching the show.

You may have heard about the plan my employer has to split in two. Bear in mind that there is no final decision.

Statement on the future of the EY organization | ey.com

What does this mean for me? Interesting question. Given that the proposed split would be along service lines, if you work in a customer facing position, where you would go is pretty clear. Auditors would remain with the existing firm and consultants would move to the new company. For employees like me, however, it’s not straightforward. For groups like Information Technology (where I am), Finance, Human Resources, and any other internal department, the people could go to either one. That’s what’s likely to happen. Some of us stay and some of us move.

That’s all I know. I’ll share what news I can as it happens.

Stay healthy and safe.

During the coverage of Queen Elizabeth II’s death today it was mentioned more than once that during her seventy year reign she only took three vacations as a private citizen. All of them were to Kentucky. She visited Kentucky five times altogether.

During her visit in 1986 she attended Morning Prayer at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Versailles. The rector at the time was Carl Belden, who had been in my Great Aunt Mary’s first grade class at McKinney Elementary School in Hustonville, KY. He was a great source of comfort to my family when she passed away and gave one of the eulogies at her funeral. She meant that much to him.

I share this because it’s a reminder to me that we’re all connected, often more closely than we think. We should care about and for each other, regardless of any differences. I think the story of a priest that held a service attended by a monarch and preached at a schoolteacher’s funeral is a good example of that.

Here’s a news report of the Queen’s visit to St. John’s. Side note: Former KY Governor A. B. “Happy” Chandler was also Commissioner of Baseball when Jackie Robinson became the first African American to play in Major League Baseball in the modern era.

And Ms. Eureth White had to sit clear across the church.
