Happy Halloween.

My cable modem continued to drop its connection so I replaced it today.

D&D tomorrow. The players are closing in on their quarry.

Stay healthy and safe.

I went to bed last night around midnight. I usually catch up on some webcomics using my iPad before I go to sleep. About halfway through my reading my internet connection went out. I rebooted my cable modem but it wouldn’t reconnect. I turned out the light thinking that I’d have to buy a new one in the morning because I had status reports due by 3 PM on Friday.

I woke up at 4 AM and after lying awake for a while checked my internet connection. It was working. I offered a prayer of thanks for not having to go to Best Buy in a few hours and went back to sleep.

I woke up at 9 AM. I had been out cold. I must have slept through my alarm or turned it off in my sleep. I went into the bathroom and turned on the light. Nothing. I tried the bedroom light. Nothing. Power was out in the area. Now I had to figure out where I could go to get an internet connection if power didn’t come on soon because if those status reports weren’t done by 3 PM the world would come to an end. I also didn’t have a way to make coffee so the world could go ahead and end as far as I was concerned.

The power came back around 10:30, as I was considering spending $30 to have Uber Eats deliver a Box O’Joe®. I made coffee and turned on my work laptop. I had started a massive software update on it Wednesday afternoon. It would run and power off when done. I was out yesterday so I hadn’t turned it on since. I logged on and Windows started up. A dialog box came up asking for my password again, which isn’t unusual after a major software update. What was unusual was that I kept getting messages that the connection wouldn’t complete. I tried at least a half dozen times using different passwords and changing other settings with no luck. I was looking up the number for technical support when it finally connected.

Thank you, Lord. I wrote and sent my status reports before another disaster could strike. At that point I wouldn’t have been surprised if my laptop had caught fire.

Thanks to everyone for the well wishes. I’m feeling better. I think it’s just change of season allergy / sinus / crud issues.

Stay healthy and safe.

The last 24 hours: a summary:

  • We were under a tropical storm warning from Zeta through the night; power blipped a few times and we got some wind and rain
  • I took the day off, slept, and tried to decide if I was feeling better; still undecided
  • I ordered Chinese food for dinner
  • Not much humor out there right now; Super 70s Sports to the rescue
  • Season finale of Archer is on tap after this

Stay healthy and safe.

I’ve been watching The Queen’s Gambit on Netflix. It’s based on an 1983 novel by Kentucky author Walter Tevis, who also wrote The Hustler, The Man Who Fell to Earth, and The Color of Money, among other things. It’s set in part in 1960s Lexington, with some fun period references. (Who remembers Ben Snyder department stores?)

I was at UK when the book was published. Tevis came to the campus bookstore to do signings and I got an autographed copy.

It’s a good show and a good book. Check them out, as well as his other works.

Stay healthy and safe.

We’re having a nice fall evening here. It’s warm outside and a steady rain is falling. I think I’m going to watch the 1976 movie Network. It feels appropriate.

Stay healthy and safe.

I’m tired, but I’ve been tired all week, so that’s nothing new. What is it, Thursday? I guess I’ll watch the new episode of Archer. It’s one of those times when everything feels like a slog and sleeping sounds like the best solution to the problem, regardless of what it is. This too shall pass.

Stay healthy and safe.

Note: this song came up at random. I mentioned Archer earlier. One of my favorite episodes is season five, episode 5, Southbound and Down, which pays tribute to Smokey and the Bandit. Very NSFW.
