The COVID-19 Diary: Wednesday 29 December

The Washington Post has an interesting article about a CBS Sunday Morning piece Ted Koppel did earlier this year about The Andy Griffith show and Mt. Airy, NC, the self-appointed inspiration for Mayberry. Here’s the summary.

  • A lot of people view the show through a nostalgic lens; times were good, everyone was friendly, people got along, etc., and wish they could live like that again
  • Mayberry in the 1960s never existed – anywhere – and the problems of the 1960s – racial unrest and the Vietnam War, for example – were never brought up on the show
  • Confusing fantasy with reality is problematic, to say the least

On a side note, a guy that claimed to have whistled the show’s theme song performed at an assembly at my junior high school in the 1970s. (Check the comments.)

Stay healthy and safe.
