The COVID-19 Diary: Saturday 23 May

I want to say a few words about wearing masks in public. When I go out, I wear one. One reason is because I want to take precautions against getting COVID-19, but the main reason is because I want to avoid spreading the disease in case I’m infected and don’t know it. I have a few health conditions that put me at risk if I get sick, but my chances of survival are pretty good. On the other hand, I have a family member that has a compromised immune system. If they get COVID-19, it would probably kill them. Sorry if that sounds dramatic, but it’s the truth. I want to do everything I can to make sure I’m not hurting someone else.

In short, it’s not about me. The more I keep that in mind as I go through life, COVID-19 and otherwise, the happier I am.

You’ve probably seen news reports about people getting upset when they’re denied entrance to businesses without masks. I have no sympathy for them. It’s not an infringement on their rights as Americans. Businesses can set just about any rules they want, within the law, for people to enter their establishments. (No shirt, no shoes, no service.) My employer is getting ready to reopen some of its offices. The rules are simple. If you can work from home, please continue to do so. If you come into the office, you wear a mask. They’re sending us masks so there’s no excuse.

Please wear a mask in public.

The governor of North Dakota said it well.

I care about all of you. Stay healthy and safe.
